Participants of the FGD on Private International Law

 

Rina Shahriyani Shahrullah, Ph.D, Head of Master of Law Program, Universitas Internasional Batam (UIB) participated in the FGD on Private International Law on 27 February 2020 at UIB. The FGD aims to complete the Academic Draft of Private International Law in Indonesia. Dr.Shahrullah stated the consequences of Batam City being located at the border between Singapore and Malaysia are interaction between Indonesian citizens and foreign citizens and as well as between Indonesian companies in Batam and foreign companies. These interactions may result in marriages or trade agreements. The problems arise when disputes occur due to different nationalities and legal systems. In this conjunction, private international law become significant because it will determine which judicial body has the authority to resolve juridical issues that contain foreign elements (choice of jurisdiction), which law must be enforced to regulate and or resolve juridical issues that contain foreign elements (choice of law) and to what extend a court considers and recognizes the decisions of foreign judges and implements them (enforcement of foreign judgments). The FGD was attended by various stakeholders, namely officials from Immigration Office, Batam Chamber of Commerce, Batamindo Industrial Park, and others.
